Fort of Santa Catarina - Sagres

This Fort, dedicated to St. Anthony, was built in reign of D. Manuel or D. John III, date not given, but prior to 1587 - as it is drawn on the map of this region during the attack of Francis Drake. He had control function as an area of possible landing and protect the fishermen who had a frame of fishing for tuna.

Inside, there is a chapel dedicated to Santa Catarina. The entrance of the Fort, a sports Shield with the Weapons of Reais and an entry dated 1632 which refers to the reconstruction of the fort that year.

The earthquake of 1755 caused him great damage, and was gradually abandoned. It was, finally, recovered in 1960, and on the foundations of the old barracks was a tea house, whose works were carried out by the Directorate of National Buildings and Monuments, as a result of work done in the Cabo de S. Vicente Sagres and the end of the decade from 50 in view the celebrations of V Centennial of the Death of Infante D. Henrique.
